Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama has hailed tea factories from the region for their continued support in education through issuance of bursaries to needy children.

Speaking on Tuesday at the county headquarters when he met representatives from at least six tea factories from the region, the county boss said supporting the education sector was a community responsibility.

The governor thanked the management of the factories for their social responsibilities.

He said the support had not only helped the national government to deal with raising cases of needy students but also the county government that has increasingly faced pressure even though the function still lies under the national government.

“I want to thank you for the continued support in education in our county. It is a responsibility of all of us even though it is not devolved. Giving back to the society is our obligation and we ought to support those who are needy,” he said.

Nyagarama who at one time served as a vice chairperson of KTDA urged the management of factories to give priority to 2015 KCPE candidates from needy backgrounds who will be joining national and county schools.

“We have many needy cases and it will be appropriate if you give bursaries to those who will be joining national and county schools,” he said.

Nyamira tea factories chairman Mr Alex Mbugua said at least 25 KCPE candidates who are set to benefit from the bursaries have been identified.

“We have already identified 25 students and and the process is still ongoing. We want to assure the public that we are also committed to supporting education,” he said.

Among the factories set to give bursaries include Nyankoba, Nyansiongo, Kipkebe, Sang’anyi and Tombe.
