Fruit vendors in Kibera’s Laini Saba market are an unhappy since the year started as their businesses have not been successful at all.

This is due to the high rate at which their fruits rot making them count their losses as more fruits, especially oranges, are thrown in the market dumping site due to low quality.

A trader, Dolphine Obiye, said on Tuesday evening at the market that her business is almost shutting down due to lack of customers. She complained that there are days she goes without getting a single client since the year started and she has thrown oranges worth sh8, 000 this year alone.

“I have been in this business for seven years. This is where I get my daily bread from to pay school fees for my two children, pay rent, electricity and water bills. I buy a crate of oranges at sh2, 700 – sh2, 800. I sell one orange at sh10 but due to lack of customers since the year started, I dropped the price by half that but that has not improved the situation,’’ she said.
