Residents of Keroka town have condemned the ongoing demolitions being carried out by the county government of Kisii.

The demolitions are said to be paving the way for a project that intends to see the building of a major bypass to ease congestion in the border town.

On Tuesday, a number of houses were demolished in the town by workers from the department of public works from Kisii County government.

The victims of the demolitions led by Thomas Mong’are termed the demolition illegal and demanded an immediate explanation from the county government.

“It’s really unfortunate that the Kisii County government can overstep the law by demolishing houses belonging to us," said Mong'are.

"We are legal owners of the land and to make the situation worse, none of us was given an eviction order. The actions of the county government are illegal and retrogressive,” he said.

They also faulted the county government of executing the work without proper consultation with the county government of Nyamira.

“This is an illegal occupation of our town. They know that we have a border dispute with Nyamira and that hasn’t been resolved. Kisii county should desist from intimidating innocent people in the name of constructing a by-pass," said Mong'are.

They also threatened to stage a demonstration against the James Ongwae led government if it fails to address the issue in a week’s time.d.
