The Salaries and Remuneration Commission chair Sarah Serem has waded into the debate that some Members of Parliament made fake mileage claims saying leaders must lead by example or quit if they are not ready to live by expectation of their offices.

She said some MPs are claiming up to Sh1.5 million per month which is unimaginable on how such travels are made.

"Excessive salaries and fake claims will hurt the economy if not checked. It’s sad that there are some counties that send the entire county to this foreign trips. They should only go for meaningful foreign trips which have a positive impact on citizens,” she said.

The SRC boss noted that the country spend Sh1.5 billion on salaries and allowances to legislators every year which the economy cannot sustain and asked MPs to live by Chapter Six of the constitution.

Uasin Gishu County Assembly Speaker Isaac Terer echoed her sentiments saying county assemblies should lead by example saying any economy that spends more on salaries and less on production becomes a consumer economy.

He added that Uasin Gishu County Assembly will introduce biometric register next year so that that sitting allowances are accurately captured.

Serem was speaking on Tuesday in Eldoret when she paid a courtesy call to Terer in his office.

Heads of departments and political leaders of Uasin Gishu assembly also attended.
