Mavoko MP has asked Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua to stop using his powers to intimidate Mavoko squatters with an intent of forcefully evicting them from a land belonging to a parastatal.

Patrick Makau said Mutua has no constitutional mandate to order eviction of the squatters who have settled on the East African Portland Cement Company land in Athi River, as land is not a devolved function.

"I am shocked to learn that Mutua has demand the squatters who have settled on land belonging to the public under custody of the Portland Cement Company in Mavoko to be evicted. He should know his roles as a governor because that is unacceptable," said Makau.

Addressing Kasuitu residents on Sunday, Makau said the governor was doing a great injustice to Mavoko squatters by blocking land resettlement in the region, a process he said had already been started by the national government through the national lands commission.

He accused Mutua of being insensitive by publicly announcing that there were no squatters in Mavoko terming those occupying parts of the controversial portland land as land grabbers.

Makau said security agents from the region should desist from the governor's influence, arguing that the squatters had lived peacefully for years even before devolution took effect.

He claimed Mutua had in several instances and occasions publicly called him names for pushing for resettlement of the squatters in his constituency.

"I am not only an MP but also a member of parliamentary lands committee and general secretary of land affairs in the Wiper Party. It is my constitutional right to demand the Portland land be reverted to the community for resettlement of the squatters," said Makau.

He added, "Mutua wrote a letter to the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission to investigate me for grabbing the Portland land. He has got no powers and authority to do so," said Makau.

The MP said Mutua should serve the residents who elected him instead of abusing office, misusing public resources, disrespecting and abusing other leaders.

Makau maintained that he would continue pushing for the resettlement of squatters in his constituency.
