Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri has hit out at the clergy who have threatened to hold demonstrations over the proposed regulations for churches in the country.
“I do not know what is wrong with the people of Kenya because they like demonstrating so much without good reasons,” he said, and added; “pastors should not demonstrate because this is a proposal.”
He pointed out that rafts of amendments that have been presented by the Attorney General Githu Muigai are not an enactment but a proposal, calling for dialogue and not demonstration.
“What the Attorney General Githu Muigai has given us is a proposal and this is what the church and the government should sit down and deliberate on in a calm and collected manner,” he said on Thursday in his constituency.
He was quick to point out that the government was not in any way trying to muzzle the church in its work, but shielding Christians from those who hide under the veneer of the ministry but are out to fleece people.
The church has protested the new regulations prompting President Uhuru Kenyatta to ask the office of the Attorney General to work together on formulating regulations that do not infringe on their right to worship.
Some of the contentious clauses as contained in the proposal is that which requires all men of God to attend a theological college, banning of live televangelism, developing curriculum for bible colleges among others.
