Kisii Governor James Ongwae and his deputy Joash Maangi have promised to permanently employ youths who were contracted to unclog blocked drainage in Kisii town.

The 1,800 contracted youths across the county will respond to and assist in mitigating effects of El Nino rains.

"We have heard your concerns and I promise to take them into consideration as soon as your contract expires," governor Ongwae told the youths.

Maangi said: "You are important and we will consider to have you on regular basis so that you can help in cleaning up various town centers, markets and rivers in the county."

This is after the contracted youths asked the county government to employ them on a permanent basis so that they can earn a living.

"We have worked well governor, we request you to employ us so that we can continue serving the county," Cyrus Okemwa, one of the youth group leaders told governor Ongwae.

The chairman of the county’s El-Nino technical committee Zablon Ongori said the youth groups comprising 200 individuals in each of the 45 wards will conduct emergency repairs of roads, open up blocked drainage, collect garbage, clean markets and attend to any emergencies in their respective wards.
