A prime suspect in the recent serial killings targeting sex workers in Nakuru town was on Monday arraigned at the High Court in Nakuru to face murder charges.

The accused, Ashton Wachira, is facing charges of murder over the death of Maureen Wanjiru alias Wahu on the night of January 17, 2016 at Freehold estate in Nakuru town.

Resident Judge Maureen Odero said Wachira was only meant to be made aware of the criminal charges facing him but he will not take plea until the next appearance.

Wachira who seemed unfazed by the court when his name was called out, said he had changed his name and urged the court to change it in the charge sheet.

“Those are no longer my names, I changed them and I am now a Muslim so please change them,” he said.

Judge Odero ordered that Wachira be taken to hospital for mental assessment at the Rift Valley Provincial Hospital and psychiatric report availed before court.

The court also ordered that he be remanded at the Nakuru GK Prison.

In the same court, Jonathan Kipkosgei was charged with the murder of Anita Chelangat on the night January 7 and 8, 2016 at Solian Location in Koibatek.

The court also ordered that Kosgei be taken to hospital for mental assessment at the Rift Valley provincial hospital and psychiatric report availed before court as well be remanded at the Nakuru GK prison.

The cases will be mentioned on February 1, 2016 for pleas.
