Victims of the recent human-wildlife conflict in Kisumu County are set to receive Sh10 million compensation.
Kisumu Governor Jack Ranguma on Thursday met members of the recently formed County Wildlife Conservation and Compensation Committee, led by their chairperson, Christine J Boit and Wilson Nyariwo over the matter. Mr Ranguma said they discussed how two residents from Kisumu County who were victims of human wildlife conflict could be compensated according to Wildlife Compensation Act 2014.
“The team recommended that they each be compensated Sh5 Million,” said Mr Ranguma.
He said that they agreed to further task the committee to ensure they assess and evaluate all cases of loss, damage and death caused by wildlife across the county for immediate compensation.
Recently, two people died after a crocodile attacked them along Lake Victoria shores in Kisumu West.
The crocodile dragged the two into the water with residents looking helplessly as their loved ones were mauled by the vicious animal.
They then searched for the bodies but only recovered them a day later.
Residents living along the lake have raised concern over attacks by wildlife, especially hippopotamuses, which destroy crops in Dunga area, and crocodiles that injure and sometimes kill people.
