West Mugirango bright students have a reason to smile after the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) disbursed Sh20 million bursary to brilliant but needy students in the area.
Area CDF chairman Benson Onchwari said 1,189 students from both secondary schools and tertiary colleges benefited from the funds.
“We gave Sh15 million to students in colleges and universities while Sh5 million was given to secondary school students,” he said.
Speaking to the press in his office on Thursday evening, Onchwari said most of the learners who applied for the funds benefited regardless of their ethnic background.
“Those pursuing degree, diploma and certificate courses each received Sh15,000, Sh10,000 and Sh8,000 respectively,” he said.
He said the cheques for those students who have been shortlisted would be sent to their respective learning institutions this week.
He disclosed that the committee awarded the bursaries on merit, with the most needy and vulnerable being given priority.
Meanwhile, the constituency is targeting to do other projects, including building bridges, classrooms, dormitories, laboratories, toilets and dining halls in local schools.
MPs pushed for the increase of the funds, which saw the national allocation move from Sh23 billion allocated in 2014/2015 to Sh33 billion in the current financial year.
