Residents of Kikuyu have been urged to take their disabled relatives to St Fransis of Assisi Catholic Church in Kikuyu on Saturday to receive free wheelchairs.
Chairman of Equip Ministries International (EMI) in Kenya David Gitonga said they plan to distribute more than 500 wheelchairs during the event that will start at 9am.
He said EMI has partnered with the Catholic Church to help the disabled in Kikuyu.
The ministry plans to donate free wheelchairs in all the 47 counties, said Gitonga, adding that Kiambu is their second county after Murang’a, which they visited in April.
Gitonga who spoke Thursday during the ongoing preparations for the event said most of the disabled cannot afford wheelchairs, a move that hinders their movement.
He said the programme also aims at ensuring that the disabled also feel appreciated and remembered.
He advised parents against locking up their disabled children in houses for fear of being discriminated by society.
"We urge Kikuyu residents and its environs to bring their disabled relatives so that they can benefit from the programme. We will also have people who will teach them how to use the wheelchairs. Don't feel ashamed by locking them in houses, only those who will be present will be given," said Gitonga.
The branch chairman further warned that the wheelchairs are not for sale.
