Residents of Mti Mingi in Gilgil sub county have been urged to embrace usage of 'Jiko Kisasa' as they are environmental friendly and economical to cook with.
Speaking to journalists in Gilgil town Saturday afternoon after meeting with a women group that wants to venture into making 'Jiko Kisasa', Mary Muiga, an environmentalist from Laikipia University College said the initiative was aimed at enabling people improve on their cooking methods as the stoves are modern and better than those that use firewood.
The stoves are made from soil ash and ballast which are compressed into different shapes.
They are of several types, including rocket brick, rocket mud and firewood stoves.
She added that: '' these jikos are good since they will enable you save money through the use of minimal firewood hence conserving the forests and the environment.''
The don noted that that the stoves are smoke free but emit more heat because they have one outlet of heat, hence cook faster and within short time compared to the indigenous ones.
