A Kisumu law court on Friday morning fined a 40-year old man Sh10, 000 for selling illicit liquor and operating a business without a permit from the relevant authorities.
Stephen Marwa was found guilty of both offenses by Kisumu chief magistrate Catherine Owino.
During the previous hearing, the court heard that Marwa, a resident of Obunga in Kisumu was arrested on the December 5, last year engaging in the sale of outlawed liquor.
During the arrest, his equipment were confiscated and 10,000 litres of illicit brew destroyed.
He was arrested together with other revelers and some of his family members but they were released due to lack of evidence linking them to the brewing and selling the liquor.
In giving the sentence, Owino condemned the incident, saying that people should look for legit ways of earning an income.
She added that illicit liquor was unsafe for human consumption as many people have lost their lives before just for drinking it.
In his defence, Marwa told the court that brewing was the only means available to him that could put food on the table for his family, and asked the court to give him a week in order to raise the fine.
However his request was dismissed as he was required to pay immediately.
