Residents of Rukindu sub-location in Yatta sub-county have requested the area administration to shut down two bars in the area which they said were contravening Mututho Laws.

The Sub-county Liquor Licensing Committee Chairperson Esther Mueni said she had received the complaints about the bars and had notified the Sub-county administrator and police about the matter.

The residents requested that licenses for the two bars be revoked, saying they were not only selling illicit liquor but were also located near learning institutions.

Mueni said her officers had visited the bars in question several times but had not found any evidence to support the residents’ claims.

She, however, assured residents that tough disciplinary measures would be taken against any bar operators found to be contravening the law.

The Mututho Laws, as the Act and subsequent laws are known, limits sales of alcohol, bar and nightclub hours and how and where alcohol could be consumed.

The laws were named after the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse chairman after he moved a motion that led to adoption of the Alcoholic Drinks Control Act.

Besides drinking hours, the Act introduced new packaging guidelines requiring alcohol to be packaged in glass bottles instead of sachets which were preferred by mixers because of their cost.
