Young men in Kibra lack commitment in utilising the empowerment opportunities availed to them by the government.
This is according to Ms Elector Opar, Women and Youth Officer in Lang’ata and Kibra.
Opar has expressed concerns over the low turnout of male youth to register and benefit from the Youth Enterprise Development Fund.
“It is worrying to see that only female youth and women who are showing commitment in utilising opportunities that have been created by the government whereas our young men remain idle along the corridors of the slum contemplating on how to carry out crime,” she said.
She was addressing the public during an open forum organised in Soweto West village where it emerged that the number of male youth who are working in collaboration with the National Youth Service are much fewer than the female youth.
“If you walk along the streets of Kibra, you will realize that majority of those who work tirelessly with NYS are women our young men are nowhere to be seen,” added Opar.
Being the Officer in charge of Uwezo Fund in Kibra and Lang’ata, Opar called upon the male youth to form development groups and register for loans and grants to enable them start businesses.
"The doors are open for everyone as long as you have formed and registered a group that is business oriented," she said.
