Kikuyu Council of Elders has appointed two youths from Thika to sit in its council to represent youth matters and their empowerment.
Joseph Karanja will represent Thika town sub-county youths while Julius Macharia has been appointed as the organising secretary.
Speaking to a group of youths in Ngoingwa on Sunday, the two who were appointed on New Year's eve, stressed the need for Gikuyu youths to know about their culture and their role in communal and national leadership.
"We as the youths are the future of our community as well as that of our country. However, the elders have noted that many youths have lost touch with their culture leading them to a state of obscurity and cannot stand up to be counted," said Karanja.
Macharia, on his part, noted that many had as a result resorted to drugs rendering them more useless.
"This is why our main role as members of the Kikuyu Council of Elders will be to mentor and empower the youths so that they can be reliable figures in society," Macharia said.
