Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wa Friday handed over 74 driving licenses to boda boda riders who were sponsored through Kikuyu Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

The riders were also given helmets and reflective vests to enhance safety during their operations.

Speaking at the Thogoto Huduma Centre, Ichung’wa said sponsoring the youth in driving schools was a way of giving them skills to get jobs or even employ themselves.

He said most youth could not afford the cost of enrolling at driving schools.

He also said most youth in the area learned driving through 'trial and error', claiming they were the cause of most road accidents.

The lawmaker said the programme to sponsor more youths was ongoing and the next group will be recruited in March.

He said that by this, they will be certain to have well-trained drivers and boda boda riders and reduce road accidents.

"In addition, these reflector vests and helmets issued to boda boda riders are to enhance road safety since most of the riders don’t have them. However, I also want to urge you to use the roads well and obey the traffic rules," said Ichung’wa.

He said 42 boda boda riders received protective gears.
