Careless driving is the leading cause of the destruction of Kenya's first superhighway barely three years after it was opened.
According to Philip Ndeng'a who heads Incident Management System at SinoHydro, the company contracted by the government to maintain Thika Superhighway, careless drivers are the major contributors of the highway's destruction.
"Sometimes back vandalism was our major setback but recently careless driving is our leading cause of ripping apart the road, " said Ndeng'a.
Speaking at Juja on Tuesday, Ndeng'a identified sections of Survey to Roysambu and from Kenyatta University to Juja as the most affected.
"We are daily replacing knocked down streetlights poles, road signs, guard rails, and crash barriers which are all destroyed as a result of careless driving," Ndeng'a said.
Surprisingly, according to him, drivers of personal cars are the main perpetrators of this crime as opposed to PSV drivers who are known for their notorious habits on roads.
SinoHydro construction company has performance based contract to fill up potholes, cracks, joints and spalls in addition to maintenance of footpaths and other structures on the highway.
The company's contract with the government is ending this year.
