A chief in Nakuru County is breathing hot under the collar of school heads for allegedly defying a government directive to release certificates for students with outstanding fee balances.
On Monday, Kaptembwa Chief Stephen Koech has accused secondary school heads of frustrating school leavers.
“Some school heads are really frustrating us because a person comes to my office and explains his/her situation and I write a letter so that the school can release the certificate but it does not happen. They do not consider a chief as a government employee tasked with the responsibility of running a place like this,” he said on Monday in Kaptembwa.
Koech further stated that the government needs to enforce the directive since many students are desperate without the document.
“Some people are just depressed and they end up doing bad things because they cannot even apply for a job without a certificate. My appeal is to the government to enforce this directive before the frustration gets out of hand,” he said.
Deputy President William Ruto fired the directive early last year directing all school heads to release certificates for candidates with outstanding fee balances.
But this is yet to happen as some principals are adamant and will not release the certificate without settling the debt first.
