The county government of Nakuru has been asked to investigate the existence of a kangaroo court at Wakulima market.
Nakuru Hawkers’ patron Simon Nasieku said the court is being used to punish traders who do not abide by the market's rules.
Nasieku claimed some traders have been victimised by the said court which he said has no jurisdiction to handle market disputes.
"At the market, there is a kangaroo court that is harassing traders by passing harsh judgments on them and the county government should investigate that,” said Nasieku.
"The kangaroo court has no power to handle cases within the market and that should be stopped immediately,” he added.
A few traders who sought anonymity for security reasons said the court exists and operates from within the market.
"The court is there and has its bosses who make decisions. The court has its operating days and is just inside the market," said one trader.
"We have to abide by what it says because of we don't, we will be evicted from the market but we feel the court is not fair at times," added another trader.
However, when contacted, Nakuru County acting Finance who also doubles up as the Trade CeC Anne Njenga refuted the claims saying all the markets within Nakuru County are under the control of the county government.
“We have no such thing at any market and all I know is that we are in control as the Finance department and any such claims are new to me since nobody has raised the complaint with us,” she said.
