Kisii County Governor James Ongwae has announced plans to upgrade Daraja Mbili market, the region's largest open air market.
He said the market will undergo a major face lift to facilitate construction of sheds to cushion traders from the effects of adverse weather conditions.
He said work will begin once the national government releases Sh400 million it had promised the county to aid in the project.
Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) is expected to provide architectural designs for the market.
The market traders have in the recent past complained and held demonstrations over the poor condition of the market.
