Cases of defilement in Kangundo sub-county have dropped drastically since last year December.
Kangundo sub-county OCPD Jane Kuria today in her office said that since the beginning of the year only one case of defilement has been reported compared to 64 cases reported by December, 2015.
However, Kangundo sub-county children officer Susan Ouma attributed the significant decrease of the cases to community awareness and sensitization on child protection and rights as well as collaboration between stakeholders on addressing sexual abuse in children.
"The networking and collaboration among stakeholders on sexual molestation in minors have yielded fruits as the community is more sensitive to children's welfare and protection,” said Ouma.
Ouma also said that more needed to be done to protect children against sexual abuse as some cases are never reported while some parents and relatives of children who have been sexually abused collude with the perpetrators hence denying the victims justice.
“Some of the perpetrators get away by paying money to the parents of the children while other cases especially incest are never reported,” said the child officer.
She, however, warned parents and guardians to desist from settling defilement cases outside court as the act denies the victim justice quoting 'he who wears the shoe knows where it pinches'.
