Kisii University Vice Chancellor Prof John Akama has urged students to work hard in school and achieve academic excellence for prosperity.

Addressing a gathering at Nyabururu grounds on Friday during the funeral of former principal for Nyabigena High School, Joseph Obare, Akama challenged students to be determined and utilise the opportunity they have for acquisition of knowledge.

He asked students to follow the footsteps of Obare whom he said embraced education with a lot effort.

“Obare stood for education and the only way we can continue his ambition is through students working hard and excelling. We are living in an era where education is the only tool to fight the ignorance, poverty, unemployment and other challenges facing humankind.”

Prof Akama also challenged parents to invest in their children saying that would improve education standards in the community.

“Parents have a great role to play. There is any other option in this era apart from investing education in your children. An educated person in an educated community,” said Akama.

His sentiments were supported by Nyabururu Girls National School Mrs Elmeldah Ochenge.

She asked students to chose friends who can enable them achieve their education ambitions.
