Kiambu The National Alliance party coordinator Gladys Chania has asked Members of County Assemblies to formulate laws that support the rights and welfare of Persons Living With Disabilities.

Speaking during the International Day for Persons Living with Disabilities held at the Lari grounds on Thursday, Ms Chania said the rights of disabled persons can be guaranteed though proper legislation.

Ms Chania observed that discrimination against persons with disabilities are still rampant in some parts of Kiambu.

The TNA coordinator said that disabled persons will be respected and treated equally if there are proper legislations to guard their rights.

She asked county assemblies to come up with laws that will protect disabled persons and also agitate for their inclusion in development.

“Members of County Assemblies in Kiambu and across the 47 counties must formulate laws and policies that will protect persons living with disabilities and also push for their inclusion in government activities,” she said.

Ms Chania said that disabled persons have the same rights as other citizens adding that cases of discrimination purported against them must be condemned.

The Kiambu TNA coordinator also asked county governments to involve more disabled persons in their executive committees.

Ms Chania noted that very few counties are engaging persons with disabilities in executive matters.

Ms Chania on the same note appealed to disabled persons to utilise the development opportunities being given by the national and county governments for their betterment.

She cited the 30 per cent tenders set aside for disabled persons saying that it will transform the lives of disabled persons.

The International Day for Persons Living with Disabilities is marked every year across the globe to recognise the rights of disabled persons and their contribution to development.
