Residents of Riat in Kisumu County are calling on the Kenya National Highways Authority to speed up the construction of the Kisumu-Kakamega highway.
They said Tuesday the construction of the road has inconvenienced them especially with the onset of the El Nino rains.
The diversions created in the area are muddy, something that has further worsened the situation, they said.
“Since the construction of this road started, our lives have never been the same again. The rains have brought mud all over, greatly hampering movement,” said Eunice Auma.
Speaking to this writer, they said that their crops have been destroyed since they border the diversion created, and therefore urging the government to speed up the construction before it too late.
“We might even starve if our crops are destroyed at this rate, we are calling on those in charge to speed up and save from this nightmare,” lamented Catherine Awour.
The residents said road construction is good for development of the country, but it should be done in such a way that it does not inconvenience residents.
The road construction is slated to end by 2017.
