In a move to remain prepared at all times in case of a fire tragedy within the university, Kenyatta University has acquired a new fire engine.

The fire engine is specially designed to transport fire fighters to scenes of incidences and to carry tools and equipment needed by the fire fighters.

The new engine was unveiled by Vice Chancellor Prof Olive Mugenda in an event graced by the university's management, staff and students on Tuesday.

The high lift fire pump nozzle is able to manage fire up to the fifth floor of a storied building.

Speaking during the flagging off ceremony, Prof Mugenda said that the university found it necessary to prepare for any fire outbreaks within the university and its environs.

She added that the university was planning to have in place an emergency response team to manage rapid fire response activities.

Besides acquisition of the new fire engine, Kenyatta University is also facilitating further recruitment and training of fire marshals in a move to ensure they can easily utilise the facilities.

The VC said that the purchase is part of her long term plans of development in the Kenyatta University which she had pledged the university and had to deliver before her departure.

Staff and students present lauded the university for the initiative that will safeguard lives and property in the event of a fire outbreak.

The institution has been relying on the county government of Kiambu fire fighters in case of any incident and will be now self reliant in dealing with fire incidences.

The institution’s Director of Students Affairs Edwin Gimode lauded the move, saying that they are expecting more from the VC before she retires.
