The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Thursday was given sh576 million for the general elections set to take place in 2017.
Speaking during the signing of the agreement, the chair of IEBC, Isaak Hassan, said the money was to be used for the voter registration exercise. It will also be used in educating those in charge of the registration on how to handle issues on the ground.
The EU ambassador, Stefano Dejak, said the money is for legal frameworks on elections, voter registration, and civic education and for security on and after the Election Day.
This has been well welcomed by Kibera residents, who said that every person now has no excuse for not voting come next year.
‘‘If the money is there, then it means things will work out very well. The money is enough to facilitate the whole exercise. I believe it will help the process run smoothly,’’ said Fridah Omollo, a resident.
