The Kisumu International Airport management has appealed to the Kenya Wildlife Service to assist in controlling hippos that invade the facility.
According to the airport's manager James Okumu, previous measures put in place to tame the hippos have not worked out, hence the need for a new strategy.
Okumu said the hippos from Lake Victoria are a threat to the airport.
“As we know hippos are dangerous and they are a threat to those who visit this airport, they might also get in the path of aircraft, altering the pathway,” said Okumu.
He said the perimeter wall erected on the airport has been destroyed once again by the hippos who invade the facility to graze.
“We need a lasting solution to this menace, previously we thought a fence will do but now we are back to square one. I am appealing to the KWS to find a way of curbing the hippos,” said Okumu.
Okumu said it is only KWS who can find a way of containing the animals at the lake as it is their mandate.
The manager said they cannot start dealing with the hippos yet they have other responsibilities to take care of.
