The United Nations Centre for Trade and Development (UNCTAD) secretary-general, Mukhisa Kituyi has challenged universities in the country to consider rolling out new courses and programmes which have a direct bearing on the new devolved systems of governance.
Kituyi warned administrations of universities against wasting a lot of resources duplicating courses and opening numerous campuses and instead utilise the resources to roll out market-driven courses that can link universities to the devolved systems of governance to create investment and entrepreneurship opportunities for the graduates from those institutions.
Speaking on Friday afternoon at Kisii University, Kituyi tipped universities in the country on the importance of re-aligning their courses and programmes with the new devolved systems of governance.
Kituyi observed that devolution was not all about tender-entrepreneurship but enabling investment environment to spur economic growth and development for the citizens.
"For rural societies there is no short cut to fighting extreme poverty except ensuring the improvement of labour to increase productivity and investment opportunities," stated Kituyi.
