Fishmongers in Mombasa are a happy lot after Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and Kenya Power (KP) join hands to rehabilitate a cold storage to help them store their fish.

Speaking during a tour of the ongoing rehabilitation of the cold storage at Old port Mombasa County Commissioner Nelson Marwa thanked the parastatals for giving back to the community.

“When the president was here, he urged the KPA managing director, to help rehabilitate the cold storage for fishmongers to international standards; we also got the help of Kenya Power who have provided electricity in old town, we are very grateful,” said Marwa.

The cold storage is expected to serve a vast majority of fishmongers along the Old Port who have not had a good facility to store their fish.

“Am thankful to all of you for having graced the tour of the ongoing construction and we will continue doing all we can to promote the locals,” said Gichiri Ndua Managing Director KPA.

KP regional manager Engineer Ezekiel Mwolala who was also at the tour expressed the same sentiments but urged the locals to help catch people who remove fuses from the transformers.

Some of the fishmongers present during the tour welcomed the move saying it will go a long way helping them run their business.

“We are grateful for this initiative now when we bring our fish, we will be able to store them at a lower cost,” said Ali Juma a fishmonger.
