Politicians should demonstrate integrity when addressing Kenyans in public functions, Nyamira Senator has said.

This comes a day after Nairobi Senator Mike Mbuvi clashed in public with Mombasa governor Hassan Joho in front of President Uhuru Kenyatta at Shikadabu grounds.

Speaking at his Sironga backyard on Sunday, Senator Okong'o Mong’are faulted leaders for insulting each other in public fora and challenged them to lead by example.

“Sometimes as leaders we really go wrong. It portrays a bad picture when we squabble in front of Kenyans who we lead. We should always set good example and that cannot be achieved if we clash in public by even going to an extent of even fighting over non-issues,” he said.

He said the country will lose momentum if leaders clash in public and might compromise peaceful 2017 general election.

“We all know that elections are around the corner. If our people see us misbehaving in their presence, then that makes it worse because we are trying to incite them along political or ethnic lines. Respect is the most important thing and it should guide our society always,” he added.

He urged the IEBC and the office of Director of Public Prosecutions to be vigilant during the entire period before elections to prosecute and punish politicians who misbehave in public and breach integrity requirements.
