Uasin Gishu County Assembly majority leader Josphat Lowoi has supported Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria’s call for a referendum to scrap the Senate and woman representatives’ posts saying they are a duplication of roles and a burden to taxpayers.

On Tuesday, Lowoi said the two almost play the same role as the Members of Parliament and were only adding a burden to the taxpayers.

"I support the call for a referendum by the Gatundu South MP to scrap the Senate and women rep since they are not necessary and only raise the wage bill thus are a burden to the common man," the Karuna/Meibeki MCA said.

Lowoi who spoke at the county assembly said if the positions are scrapped, the wage bill will drastically come down to the relief of wananchi.

"I don’t see the importance of the positions since their roles and duties have not clearly been stipulated, making them to play similar roles," he said.

At the weekend, Kuria called for a referendum to scrap the woman rep position and the Senate posts, to reduce the number of MPs in the national Parliament to 200 from the current 349 and also reduce counties from 47 to 16.
