Kangundo OCPD Jane Kuria has urged road users in Machakos County to be vigilant during this festive season.
Speaking on Monday in Kangundo Town, Kuria asked road users including drivers of both private and public service vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, to follow the set traffic rules and regulations so as to avert cases of accidents.
"During the December festive season, we witness a high number of cases of accidents, due to carelessness and ignorance of traffic rules by road users. Public vehicles operators usually get into an unnecessary rush by overloading ans speeding so as to maximise on profits, not considering the passenger's safety," said Kuria.
The OCPD also said Machakos County has been ranked 11th among counties which experienced a high number of deaths caused by road accidents in 2015.
According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), most of the accidents occurred along major roads connecting the county to Nairobi, and in different parts of the county.
The OCPD said the accidents usually occur due to ignorance of simple rules such as crossing the road using foot bridges or on zebra crossings.
She said anyone found in the opposite side of the law as far as traffic rules are concerned, will face tough consequences, as the country is fighting hard to curb road accidents.
