Locals have been urged to go for cancer screening to ascertain their status citing that early knowledge of the disease is the best way to handle cancer.

Speaking yesterday during a campaign against cancer by a private non-profit organization in Nyawita, Umoja Cancer Society Management (UCS) the director of the group Miss Anne Ogello a cancer survivor, has advised residents to go for cancer screening as the first best remedy of fighting cancer.

She cited ignorance as the biggest blow against the war on cancer.

“Early knowledge of the diseases is the best way we can handle it. Cancer is of various types ranging from skin cancer, penile cancer, liver and lung cancer among others which is only possible to note through screening. Cancer is not a curse, it is a treatable disease if handled well and early enough.” said Anne.

She raised a concern of higher increased cases of cancer now attacking children.

“It is so unfortunate our kids are as well exposed to the disease just like the elderly which was rare in the past. Cases of cancer have been on the rise which is highly blamed on current lifestyles which don’t encourage engagement of our bodies in physical activities,” she said.

“A number of people, I being a perfect example have overcome the disease through effective treatment as cancer can be controlled through a number of ways depending on the type of cancer ranging from chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immuno therapy, hormone therapy among others. Avoid ignorance and get screened for cancer,” she added.

Residents responded positively and promised to take the necessary steps to ensure the fight against cancer.

“It is now upon us to take action and go for the screening. Thank you for enlightening us and spread the word to other people,” Said John Chemngas a local.
