Mataara Water Project has added some river tributaries to strengthen generation of 30kws of the ongoing hydro-power at a cost of Kshs. 5 million.
The water power generated project will be connected to over 250 households in the Chania and Karangari village and will go a long way in enhancing rural electrification in the country.
Speaking at the factory on Tuesday, Gatundu North sub county Member of Parliament gave a cheque of Kshs. 5 million from the national government. Kigo said that the ultra-low head micro hydro-power generation will also conserve the environment by reducing the usage of firewood in the households.
The factory manager Joseph Mukora said that the project will not only enhance rural industrialisation but it will also create employment. It will also mitigate the effects of climate change and global warming.
Mukora however said that despite the move to scale up power generation, power costs are not expected to go down.
"We are mobilizing partnerships in this project so as to increase the number of households that are connected to electricity since a larger population of the rural settings are not connected to electricity," he said.
