Education Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i has hinted at auditing the accounts of public universities saying some institutions were not utilising well government monies allocated to them every financial year.

Speaking Friday at Egerton University Njoro during the inauguration of Prof Rose Mwonya as the new vice chancellor, the Education CS regretted the fact that workers in some institutions have to strike for lack of pay, while the government gives all public universities money to finance their operations.

"In the current financial year, we allocated Sh31.2 billion to our institutions in form of capitation. So I believe we have enough money to facilitate operations in all universities," he said.

Prof Mwonya becomes the varsity's fifth VC, and takes over from Prof James Tuitoek whose final term expired last month.
