A Nyamira MCA now wants the police and local administrators to take a stern action against youths who have developed a habit of idling in major trading centres.

The ward representative argues that the idle youth were engaging in robbery with violence, especially at night.

Gesima ward has in the recent past experienced a series of robbery incidences.

At least five people are currently hospitalised after suffering attacks in different incidents orchestrated by people suspected to be recruits of a highly feared gang, only known as 'Mossad'.

Speaking at Ritibo trading centre on Thursday, Mr Ken Atuti said many youths had abandoned participating in economically generating activities and instead reverted to looting for sustainability.

“I want the police and local administrators to arrest and prosecute youths who are fond of idling in trading centers during working hours. We have intelligence information that many of them have joined gangs which are looting from innocent people. I have shared the little information we have with authorities and hope an action will be taken,” he said.

Atuti said it will be appropriate if the government comes with a policy of banning idleness in public places as a measure of engaging citizens in economically viable activities to improve the economy.

“It’s not that these youths do not have something tangible to do. It’s only that they prefer reaping from where they haven’t sown. I want them to stay away from public places during working hours and participate in economically viable activities,” he said.

He said the names of suspects who have allegedly joined the Mossad gang group would be forwarded to the police for further investigations.

“I have names of youths who are fond of idling and now they are being linked with Mossad group which is linked to many of robbery with violence cases. The names will be availed to police for further investigations but what is important now, we want the police and chiefs to ensure idling is wiped out completely,” he said.
