Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has termed public schools audit programme a letdown.

Matiang’i said the ministry is aware how the programme is being run and is working on modalities on how to revamp it.

“I have talked about this issue with the Principal Secretaries in the education sector, they are aware and soon we are coming up with a system that is not corruptible,” he said.

Speaking in Kisumu on Tuesday at the Tom Mboya Labour College when he closed a retreat for government education officers, the Cabinet Secretary said the programme is shrouded in corruption.

He told county directors of education to be on the lookout and deal will errant auditors who collude with head teachers to plunder public resources.

“County directors of education are the eyes of the government on the ground and they must be vigilant to nab these auditors who have failed to adhere to their conduct,” he said.

Matiang’i said he will ensure that accountability on the use of public resources is enhanced in public institutions.

He said he will consult widely on how the programme can be reviewed to enhance effectiveness.

The CS said the government is disbursing huge amounts of money for the purchase of books yet in some schools the money is squandered and auditors cover for the culprits.
