Borabu MP Ben Momanyi has challenged the National Parliament to support a motion he drafted that seeks to reduce the number of IEBC commissioners to three and removal of constituency clerks.
Currently, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has nine commissioners on a full time basis and a host of clerks at the constituency level, a number Momanyi said is unnecessary for the country.
Mr Momanyi who was commissioning a borehole at Kiabonyoru on Wednesday, said the move will reduce substantially the amount of money incurred by the State in supporting the team in five years.
“Personally, I think having nine commissioners is ridiculous especially when we are not in elections. We should only retain three after elections since they do not have much work to do in five years’ time. I hope Parliament will support a motion I have drafted to that effect. The rest should only be recruited towards the general election,” he said.
The Wiper Democratic Party legislator slammed constituency and county clerks saying they had failed to execute their mandate of continuous voter registration.
“We cannot be paying clerks at the constituency and county level yet they fail to execute their mandate. For instance, you can evaluate their performance between the 2013 elections and now. In fact, if they were doing their job well, we will not be talking about mass voter registration. I think this is the right time to scrap those positions so then we hire them on a temporary basis,” he added.
He said the move will allow the country save millions of taxpayers’ money paid top individuals whose work is minimal.
