Githunguri MP Njoroge Baiya has asked the government to fully support dairy farmers in the country to enable them realise better returns.
Baiya said that like crop farmers who were enjoying low costs of fertilizers, the government should extend similar subsidies to dairy farmers to boost milk production.
He faulted the current seven per cent of the total budget allocated to the agriculture sector, arguing that the amount was still insufficient to cushion farmers against dairy farming challenges.
“As Parliament we are pushing county governments to dedicate 20 per cent of their budgets to agriculture to support farmers in their activities,” said the MP.
He noted that dairy farmers were facing numerous challenges such as high cost of animal feeds, which forces them to dig deep into their pockets.
Baiya was speaking during a farmers’ field day event held at Githunguri Community Hall on Monday, organised by Githunguri Dairy Cooperative Union.
