Kisii County Commissioner Chege Mwangi has warned area residents that the government will not spare anybody found promoting Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), which he said was illegal.

Mwangi warned that the law will take its course if any individual from the region will be found subjecting innocent girls to the outdated cultural practice which do not conform with the changing society.

Speaking on Sunday at Gusii Stadium during a funds drive in aid of Kisii County Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organization, Mwangi reminded area residents of the heavy fines and jail terms for those hiding behind their culture, only to subject their girls to the outdated practice which he said was outdated.  

"According to the prohibition of Female Genital Mutilation Act 2011, a person who commits an offence under this Act is liable to imprisonment for a term of not less than three years or to a fine of not less than Sh200,000 or both," stated Mwangi.

Mwangi clarified that according to the Act, the government shall take necessary steps within its available resources to protect women and girls from FGM, provide support services to victims of the vice and carry out public education and sensitise people on the dangers and adverse effects of FGM.
