The National Land Commission has not paid Sh26.5 million in allowances to the Counties Land Management Board members.
The Commission Chief Executive Officer Tom Chavangi who made the revelation told governors to assist in the payment of the allowances to the Board members.
Chavangi said the budget of the Commission was slashed as a result of austerity measures that were taken by the government.
“We have a lean budget and that has paralysed some of our operations. We have arrears in terms of allowances to the county boards, they don’t earn salary but allowances,” he said.
He said the Board members in 41 counties have not received their allowances.
Speaking in Kisumu during the swearing in of Kisumu County Land Management Board members on Tuesday, Chavangi announced that only six counties had not inaugurated their Boards.
He said the Commission through its chairman Mohammed Swazuri has put a lot of effort to ensure that those Counties operationalise the Boards.
“Our chairman has written many letters to these counties to inaugurate the Boards, we will not tire until the Boards are formed and put in operation,” he said.
Chavangi said the Boards are very critical for the management of land in the counties.
