A section of Nyamira politicians have faulted County Commissioner Mrs Josephine Onunga for insecurity in the region.
Speaking during a fundraiser at Nyaramba on Wednesday, former MPs Joseph Kiangoi and Winfred Ombui (served as North Mugirango MPs at different times) said the county commissioner had failed to tackle rampant insecurity cases reported in North Mugirango.
According to them, the commissioner was reluctant to hunt criminals in the region who were allegedly terrorising members of the business community.
“We are talking of people being attacked and robbed almost on a daily basis. The county commissioner seems reluctant to handle insecurity matters. She has never even bothered to visit affected regions yet I know she is ware of all the details about insecurity here,” Ombui said.
He questioned the role of police officers in the region, blaming them for being non-responsive whenever residents are in need of them.
“I have heard of several cases where police are called to help during robbery only to report hours late. We need to know the strategic plans of the commissioner on combating insecurity in this region,” he added.
Kiangoi, who also represents Kenya in East African Legislative Assembly threatened to write to the President to request immediate transfer or sacking of the commissioner.
“She is doing something but it’s not enough to convince us that she is willing to handle insecurity. People are losing their property to organised groups yet the government is not responding. I will write to the Head of State to request that she be relieved of her duties,” he said.
However, Onunga, through a telephone interview on the state of security said the county has registered drastic drop of crimes and urged leaders to work closely with the police and provincial administrators to combat crime.
“I don’t agree that insecurity is high as they are suggesting. Police have intensified patrols and it’s upon the community and leaders to work with us to bring to book those who are giving us headache. We have tried our best and I can confirm that insecurity incidents have reduced drastically,” she said.
