As the world marked the International Toilets Day on Thursday, it was nothing but joy for Kibera residents thanks to the arrival of Peepoo toilets, a self-sanitising biodegradable personal single-use toilet.
Peepoo toilets, an initiative of Peepoople, prevents human waste from contaminating the slum which has for a long time been associated with the flying toilets tag.
Violet Nyakeoga, Assistant Research manager at Peepoople on Thursday hailed the impact that the unique toilet has had in the informal settlement since it was launched five years ago.
The waste collected in Peepoo is in-turn used by farmers as fertiliser.
"Instead of the flying toilets, the residents can now use Peepoo which is environment friendly. It is a a toilet that is used once and collected by our team. The odour-free Peepoo bag contains urea, which sanitises the wastes from all dangerous bacteria, viruses and parasites: The waste can then be used as fertiliser,"said Nyakeoga.
According to her, schools have benefited from free such toilets whereas other residents are charged Sh75 for one roll of bags.
"Schools are given freely while the rest paying Sh75 for a complete roll. These toilets have helped schools in ensuring proper sanitation considering that most of them have no elaborate latrines," she added.
