Police in Nakuru are on the alert after it emerged that some boda boda operators were offering private riding lessons to their peers.
During a meeting held in Nakuru town that was organised by several Saccos operating in Nakuru and its environs, the operators were cautioned against offering private driving classes because the students in question were the main perpetrators of flouting traffic rules.
County Traffic Commandant Charlton Mureithi specifically took issue with school leavers who had just completed their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exams saying idleness and the urge to make quick money will push them into such practices.
“Whether he is you son, brother, relative or even friend; let them go to an approved driving school, get a driving licence before engaging in moving around with a motorbike,” he said.
He revealed that the traffic department was on high alert in dealing with such cases so as to help avert the rising number of accidents this festive season.
“Nakuru is among the most visited places in the county during festivities and holiday. We don’t want to make visitors shy away because of something we can prevent,” Mureithi explained.
He further called on different Sacco leaders to help instill discipline in the industry by ensuring that all their members are qualified drivers who know the importance of obeying traffic rules.
In a National Transport and Safety Authority report released three months ago, Nakuru was ranked second among the most accident prone areas in the country.
