The civil society wants police to speedily investigate the alleged ferrying of guns from Nairobi to Kisumu by a group dubbed Okoa Bus Park (Israel group).
The guns are allegedly sneaked into Kisumu from Kibra and Kayole in Nairobi by 30 group members who arrived a week ago in the town to take full control of the Bus Park.
Tension is building at the Bus Park and across the county following the allegations and circulation of “Israel group” leaflets on Monday night.
The group also target to eliminate some individuals who are currently managing the park. Two operators at the park have recorded statements after they were threatened by the group.
Operators based at the park have opposed the plans by Okoa group and vowed to retain the management of the park.
Residents claim the group is a scheme to destabilise Kisumu ahead of 2017 general elections.
Kisumu Residents Voice Association chairman Audi Ogada said the allegations should not be treated lightly by county security team.
He added the group should be arrested and interrogated over the allegations and their motives in town.
“Transportation of firearms into Kisumu town is a serious security concern especially now that the country heads to polls in 2017,” Ogada said.
He said the Bus Park must be properly safeguarded because it serves very many people including school children.
Speaking to the press yesterday, he asked county security chairman John Elungata and Assistant Inspector General Joseph Keitany to institute an independent probe on the mater.
Keitany said they will not tolerate any act of lawlessness and assured public if maximum security.
“We have launched investigations over the matter and any culprits will be arrested and charged in court,” he said.
Keitany said he meet with leaders of Kisumu Bus Park over their grievances and directed Kisumu CID Jackson Kieti to investigate the matter.
Elungata, county commissioner said they are keenly following the matter and those planning chaos in town will be apprehended.
“We already have the names of those people and leaflets and I can assure the public not to panic,” he said.
Last year, two groups 'American Marines' and 'China Squad' fought over the control of the bus park.
