Parents in Kisumu County have asked the County Director of Education Sylvester Mulambe to investigate teacher absenteeism in schools.
They claimed schools in rural areas performed poorly in last year’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exams due to the vice.
According to them, this was so because teachers in the said schools have allegedly developed a trend of absconding duty.
“Walk into these schools any day in the morning and you will barely find the teachers around. The afternoon is a definitely a bad time to visit as the teachers would have left. They are hardly at the schools and that is the reason rural schools perform poorly,” said Jane Anyango.
She also wants the government to lift the ban on extra classes for rural schools to improve performance.
