Sameta Sub-County director of education, Timothy Odhiambo, has warned all schools within his jurisdiction against corporal punishments against students.
Odhiambo reiterated the need for school to embrace alternative correctional mechanisms to avoid subjecting learners to corporal punishments, which he said had been outlawed in schools.
Speaking on Thursday afternoon at Eburi Primary School, Giasaiga Sub-Location during the inauguration of the schools board of management (BoM), Odhiambo warned of dire consequences against any teacher found caning their learners in the name of disciplining. He warned that teachers and BoMs risk legal action if found to have allowed caning in their schools since it amounts to cruelty against learners.
"Let me make it clear that caning of pupils and students is outlawed and any teacher or BoM found allowing such punishments against learners in their schools risk legal action for subjecting children to cruelty," said Odhiambo.
Odhiambo said if there was an incident of indiscipline by a pupil or student, the said learner will be suspended from school for a period of fourteen days, after which, they will come with their parents or guardians and appear before the BoM to determine their cases.
The director reminded head teachers to keep records of every correction measure taken against any cases of indiscipline involving pupils or students, capturing such details as the learner's age, correction measure taken against the said pupil or student.
In case of mass indiscipline, the BoM must declare the school closed and pupils or students must be held from attending school in a period not more than fourteen days.
