Nominated Senator Paul Njoroge Ben has hit out at a section of MPs in the National Parliament who want to be paid once the august House is dissolved next year to pave way for the general election.

Njoroge said it is shameful for leaders to make such statements since it is outrageous to pay someone for services not rendered.

“It is very shameful for an elected leader to demand payment yet they are not working. How do you pay somebody who is not offering you any services? he asked.

He was speaking in Naivasha on Tuesday.

Njoroge further stated that such statements and ill-informed moves by some elected leaders had dented their image, and the public has perceived them to be self-centered leaders who only care about their wellbeing and not the citizens’.

He said nobody should be paid after Parliament is dissolved since they will not have offered any service.

“As a leader, I stand my ground and say that nobody should be paid because you are not working and you only earn after working,” he said.

Some of the residents we spoke to held a similar view and stated that it was wrong to pay somebody who is not working.

“If you do not offer any service to the public and constitutionally you are out of work, you should not be paid. These people only look after their welfare but not ours,” said Victor Kahu.

Tabitha Wairimu added that those asking for the package fear that they will not be re-elected for failure to impress their constituents.
