The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has been urged to review the constituency boundaries with the view of reducing their numbers.
On Sunday, nominated Senator Janet Ongera said reducing the number of constituencies will address over-representation in the National Parliament and tame the country's rising wage bill.
Before the 2013 elections, the number of constituencies was raised to 290 from the previous 210.
Speaking in Kisii on Sunday during a fundraiser, Ongera also faulted politicians championing the scrapping of the Senate and woman representative positions as well as reducing the number of counties.
She instead urged the IEBC to consider reducing representation in National Assembly.
According to Ong’era, the commission was pressured to create certain constituencies to reduce rivalry between certain politicians.
“I really wonder why some MPs are going around advocating for the scrapping of the Senate and affirmative seats. I am aware of certain constituencies that were created just for the interest of addressing the perennial rivalry between certain politicians. This is the time to review such blunders,” she said.
Ong’era said the new constitutional dispensation aimed at empowering new county units to spur growth in rural areas and asked MPs waging relentless war on the Senate and the devolved units to start by recommending the scrapping of a section of constituencies.
“The crafters of the constitution aimed at strengthening devolution and that is why the Senate, affirmative seats and county governments should be spared. They (MPs) should start by recommending the scrapping of constituencies by reducing them to 210. That is the first step towards reducing the wage bill,” she said.
She said National Assembly should also come clear on alleged graft that has previously rocked certain House committees before coming up with recommendations that targeted other representatives.
“I want to challenge them particularly Kuria (Moses) to come out on graft allegations that have previously rocked the National Assembly before targeting other representatives. The only solution is the IEBC to start by reducing the number of constituencies to a manageable number if we are serious to reduce over-representation,” she said.
Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria has been in the forefront championing for the scrapping of the Senate and woman rep posts as well as reducing parliamentary seats in the national Assembly to a maximum of 200. He also wants the number of counties trimmed to 18.
